"Commitment means staying loyal to what you said you were going to do long after the mood you said it in has left you.”
-Anonymous
A Ceremony of Commitment, often very similar to many other kinds of wedding ceremonies, is simply a public affirmation of a couple's commitment to one another. The ceremony may be religious or secular, formal and traditional, or loose and unstructured, depending on the couple's own preferences. It is meant to be an important, personally significant commemoration event, but it is not legally binding, requires no marriage license, and has no official recognition.
Sometimes couples fall in love and want to spend the rest of their lives together. They desire to marry but they discover that doing so could create unwanted consequences for themselves and their families. Marriage could bring substantial financial problems—issues of pensions, insurance, taxes, and bequests. Other couples may not be able to, or choose not to, pursue a traditional, legal marriage for various reasons.
In each situation, the couples desire to pledge their enduring love and faithfulness and receive the blessing of their families, friends and even their church.
